The 3 things you SHOULD know about fuel contamination!

Water Contamination or AdBlue Contamination

Fuel contaminated with water, no matter whether it's unleaded or diesel, is usually a significant situation to deal with in a motor vehicle - specifically in present-day common-rail engines.

Water or AdBlue in the fuel tank can potentially cause idling issues, lumpy running, abnormal smoke and, if not addressed correctly, possibly broken injectors. Having water in petrol is less difficult to drain as compared with water in diesel - this is mostly because diesel is an oil. However we are able to take care of both situations fairly swiftly.

Be aware that in the event that the vehicle was started with the water contaminated fuel it will more than likely require a new fuel filter fitted as the old one will be totally water-logged and unusable.

I'd had a wonderful day cycling during the weekend and felt satisfied the following working day as I was en route to aid a new couple away in Link. They had pulled over after putting the wrong fuel in their stylish Mercedes CL-Class, and the car was about an hour's drive away. I arrived at their position and laughed to myself while I listened to the girl telling her husband off for being so foolish. "Exactly how could you even be able to fill up using the wrong fuel?" she asked him. I tried to explain that this occurs regularly in Somerset and that it's truly nothing at all to fret about, nonetheless he all the same had an ear bashing. I felt genuine sympathy for the guy. In any case, I removed all of the contaminated fuel, gave the motor a flush and filled them up with the proper fuel. Wrong Fuel in Car Somerset - Petrol in Diesel Car Link

Now I'm not very inclined to working weekends, and the other day was the same. I had just come away from home following a fantastic Sunday roast prepared by the wife, and I was on the way to help a guy who put the incorrect fuel in his light green Audi A3. He was located in Link hence I was with him very quickly. Just as I drove up behind the vehicle and got out he said to me "Thank the Lord! I stupidly had my mind on other stuff and did not realise I've put the wrong fuel in my petrol vehicle. Have I brought on problems by simply running it?" I stated that generally there should not be harm and also I would personally get the fuel drained right away. Naturally I removed the wrong fuel from the vehicle and filled it with the appropriate fuel, and then another contented client could carry on with his ride without any subsequent difficulty. He could hardly stop thanking me, and this is what can make operating on Sundays in Somerset a little bit better for me personally!

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
